The Irsay Award was established by Professor Edward E. Smissman in memory of one of his former graduate students, Robert D. Irsay, who died in 1970. The award was presented each year to the outstanding pharmacy graduating senior who had excelled in medicinal chemistry coursework during their studies. 1971 Deanna K. BealIn 1975, another of Professor Smissman’s former students, Dr. Norman A. Dahle, died and his friends suggested that an award be created to honor an outstanding graduate student in medicinal chemistry. It was decided to create a new graduate award by combining the memorial funds for Robert D. Irsay and Norman A. Dahle. Thus, the Irsay-Dahle Award was established and the first presentation was made in 1979. Click here for details.
Professor Smissman, who died in 1974, was a popular undergraduate instructor and it was thus decided to rename the award for undergraduate excellence in his memory. The students so honored are listed below:
