The Department
Equipment and Labs
The University of Kansas
The department is well equipped for chemical and biochemical research from the individual student's work area, through instrumentation owned by research groups, the department, and the university.
Among the instrumentation and facilities at the group and departmental level are GC/mass spectrometry; HPLC's, both preparative and analytical; cold room and biochemical prep room; refrigerated centrifuges; solid state peptide synthesis equipment; plant grinding and extraction facilities; spectrophotometers, a scintillation counter, FT-IR, and the like.
There are shared PC's or Macs in every office and lab, with high speed 100 base T network connections; some groups also have Unix workstations for molecular graphics applications (in addition to those in the Molecular Graphics and Modeling Lab). The department also has a computer support specialist who maintains and upgrades the department's computers.
Other important facilities in Malott Hall, operated by professional staff and used extensively by personnel of the department are a NMR Lab, a Mass Spectroscopy Lab, a Biochemical Research Services Laboratory, an X-ray Crystallography Laboratory, and a Molecular Graphics Laboratory, all part of the Molecular Structures Group.
