Or: Paper application

Students are admitted to the department to pursue the Ph.D. degree. Students who have either a bachelor’s or master’s degree will be considered for admission. Postdoctoral training is also available.

Admission to the department requires an undergraduate degree with a year of course work in organic chemistry, including lab; additional course work in physical chemistry and biochemistry is highly desirable. With this background, required core graduate courses, including advanced organic and medicinal chemistry, can be completed in one to one-and-a-half years.

The final steps in the Ph.D. program are the presentation and defense of an original research proposal and a dissertation describing original research work carried out by the candidate. The median time for students to complete their Ph.D. degree in the Department is about 5 years.

Inquiries are welcome at any time. Students enter the program in August, and full consideration for admission can be assured for all applications received by the preceding February 1.

Particularly outstanding domestic students and permanent U.S. residents from the United States, who may be eligible to compete for one of the special fellowships available, should apply by the end of December to be considered for these fellowships in the first year of study.
