Overview
The Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Kansas offers a ten week period of undergraduate research during the summer. Students will do independent research under the supervision of one of our faculty in areas of research involving organic chemistry or biochemistry applied to problems of biological interest. Areas of research include drugs and the chemical associated with them. Examples includes organic synthesis, drug metabolism, antibiotics, cancer chemotherapy, and central nervous system drugs.
Participants who are selected for the program receive basic instruction in laboratory research techniques, including laboratory safety, effective use of a major university science library, instruction and first-hand use of spectrometers (NMR, IR, UV), gas and high performance liquid chromatographs and specialized instrumentation of importance to a given research problem. The program is designed to give students maximum independence and to provide a full-time research experience on which to base a career decision. The experience also helps the student develop essential oral and written skills. The ten-week program concludes with a poster session, at which participants are asked to present a poster describing their summer research achievements.
Who is eligible?
Applicants should preferably have completed their junior year by the beginning of the summer research activity, but highly qualified sophomore students will be considered. (Seniors are reminded that a graduate program leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry is available and inquiries are welcome.)
Participants enroll as KU students for the summer and receive academic credit for their research work. Excellent recreational facilities and other University privileges are available to URP students. Applications are invited from all qualified people regardless of race, religion, color, sex disability, veteran status, national origin, age or ancestry. Dormitory scholarships may be available for students with demonstrated financial need.
Stipend Available
Especially qualified students are eligible to apply for the Self Research Experience for Undergraduates. This outstanding opportunity will provide a signifigant stipend as well as the opportunity to engage in a few special leadership activities with students across the campus. You need only to indicate your interest in the Self program with your application to be considered.
